Apple pulled out of Russia in March, but Russians can still buy the new iPhone 14 — here’s how

  • Russian mobile network MTS has started taking pre-orders for the new iPhone 14.
  • This is despite the fact that Apple left Russia and stopped product sales after the invasion of Ukraine.

Apple withdrew from the Russian market a week after Russia invaded Ukraine, but people in Russia can still buy the new iPhone 14 through parallel imports, a Kremlin official said.

“Why not? If consumers want to buy these phones, yes. There will be such an opportunity,” Minister of Trade and Industry, Denis Manturov, said on Sept. 8, as reported by RIA Novosti, a state media company. Manturov responded to a question about whether the new iPhone would be imported into Russia under a parallel import program.

Russia legalized parallel imports in May, months after companies withdrew en masse from Russia over the invasion of Ukraine. The system allows retailers to ship products into the country without the permission of the trademark owner. In August, such gray market sales reached nearly $6.5 billion, Manturov said Aug. 15, as reported by Interfax.

Although Apple stopped selling its products in Russia in March, some retailers in the country are still selling the remaining inventory, according to Reuters. Some have also managed to get their hands on newer models through the parallel import program.

On Thursday, Russian mobile network MTS began taking pre-orders for the newly launched iPhone 14 on its website. Prices start from 84,990 rubles ($1,382.) The telco said it could take up to 120 days to deliver the device.

Apple announced the iPhone 14 on September 7. The phone comes with a free two-year subscription to satellite service that allows users to make emergency calls even if they don’t have internet or cell service. Other new features of the phone include an always-on display and a force sensor that can detect if the user has been in a car accident. Pre-orders start on September 9 and will be available from September 16.
