2) Details

The devil is always in the details. To one man, everyone on the program who was here for the 2019 season win over Eastern Illinois says something along the lines of, “Man, this isn’t the same team.”

Coming off a narrow loss to reigning MAC champions Northern Illinois, the Panthers present challenges on both sides of the ball. It was an impressive debut for Coach Chris Wilkerson, an EIU alumnus. So much so that, even in the event of a loss, his squad now gets votes in the AFCA FCS Coaches Top 25, among others, where Chattanooga is ranked No. 10.

The Mocs were 3-3 on their way a year ago. The three losses were by a combined 12 points at Kentucky (23-28), VMI (34-37 OT) and Mercer (6-10). The three wins were with 29.0 points per game at North Alabama (20-0), Samford (55-13) and Wofford (35-10).

3) History

There isn’t much. And by not much… we mean one encounter. It was the 24-10 victory in 2019 in Rusty Wright‘s debut.

4) Superstition

At we are not super stitious, but we are a small brave. So here are a few ties to the past that hopefully bode well for this weekend.

Last week we mentioned that the last time the program won a home opener was 2019 against next week’s opponent EIU. This week’s note marks the last time the Mocs won their first road race in 2021 against next week’s current opponent…North Alabama.

5) 3 Notes to note:

  • QB Preston Hutchinson began his UTC career with a winning start, completing 11 of 18 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown. He spread the wealth with eight different pass catchers – 6 WR, 1 RB & 1 TE.
  • 46-17-2 vs. current OVC membership: Austin Peay (6-1); Eastern Illinois (1-0); State Murray (2-0); UT Martin (4-2); State of Tennessee (3-4-2) and Tennessee Tech (30-10).
  • 162 yards (19 carries) wash Ailym Ford’s 12th 100-yard game and fourth with over 150.

Bonus thing

Since we were light in game history, we thought player history power to fulfil. So a nod to two press box favorites…

Ailym Ford has 2,406 career rushing yards. That’s the eighth ever at UTC. With 52 yards on Saturday, he jumps to sixth place past Eldra Buckley ’06 (2.437) and Erroll Wynn ’10 (2.457). He is 591 meters south of the top 5 with Derrick Craine ’16 in fifth with 2,997.

Devonnsha Maxwell is third in sacks with 30.5 for his career. He needs 1.0 to pass second to Keionta Davis ’16 (31.0) and 6.5 from SoCon and school record holder Davis Tull ’14 (37.0). Maxwell is second among current FCS players.
