South Dakota concludes its non-conference schedule with a Sunday afternoon game against the state of Iowa. The match kicks off at 1:00 PM from Cyclone Soccer Complex and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Today’s game will be the sixth ever meeting between these two teams. The Cyclones won the first four games, but South Dakota took its first power five program win in team history last year when Iowa State entered Vermillion. The Coyotes only needed one goal to win the game, knocking the Cyclones out for the first time in the series’ history.
South Dakota earned a hard-fought draw in the recent game against Drake. The Bulldogs then took the lead Lexie Wood opened the scoring in the first ten minutes of the game. Joana Zanin then scored from a free kick from outside the penalty area to tie the game shortly after half-time. Both teams continued to create chances, but after the final whistle it was tied at 2-2.
Shaylee Gailus leads the Coyotes with three goals, one assist and seven points on the year. She is also tied up with Taylor Cotter for team leader in shots. Cotter claims two goals, two assists and six points on the season. zanin, Taylor Ravelocand Wood all have two targets in 2022, with Zanin having fired 10 shots so far. Ashby Johnston is tied with Cotter for team lead in assists with two.
ISU claims a 2-3-1 record to start the season. Their first win of the year came on the road against No. 24 Michigan. The Cyclones scored three goals and kept the Wolverines to two goals. Iowa State defeated in-state rival Iowa in its previous game. Jada Colbert scored two goals against the Hawkeyes, while goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz set a new high in his career with 12 saves.
Colbert leads ISU with three goals and six points on the season. Mira Emma, Jasmine Colbert and Sophie Thomas are the other three Cyclones to score this season. Silkowitz has played every minute in the net this season. She has recorded 38 saves and a .760 save percentage this year.
