Police arrest robbery suspects, find guns, others in Anambra

Anambra State Police Command has arrested a five-member gang that specializes in carrying out various criminal activities in different parts of the state.

The officers in the process also found a Berreta pistol, three motorcycles, an axe, three machetes, a police belt, a Sumec generator, 13 different brands of telephones and other incriminating items.

A statement from the police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the criminal gang was responsible for more than 25 armed robberies, kidnappings and car thefts that took place along the Oko Ufuma, Uga, Amaokpala Expressway, in Orumba North and Aguata Local Government Areas of the state. .

He said the most recent, according to the confession statement by one of the suspects, is an August 13 attack at a hotel in Ndikelionwu, where a female staff member was raped and the gang also made off with three televisions and other items.

He said the police made the arrests based on credible information they received on Sept. 6.

He pointed out that while instructing officers to keep up the pace in eliminating the criminal elements in the state, Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng assured that trust in the police would not be taken for granted, adding that all suspects will be brought to court upon completion of the investigation

The statement read: “Police officers attached to Oko Division Headquarters, acting on credible information in the early hours of 6/9/2022, broke out at a criminal hideout, an unfinished building along the Oko Ufuma Highway in Orumba North LGA , arrested an Okechukwu Okpo ‘M’ is 24 years old in Ndobasi village, Ebonyi state.

“A locally manufactured pistol, two cartridges and three plasma televisions were recovered. The criminal gang that saw the police vehicle opened fire on the officers. The officers responded and quickly engaged the armed robbers in a firefight, while other gang members fled the scene, Okechukwu was arrested.

“Preliminary investigations showed that the gang was responsible for more than 25 armed robberies, kidnappings and car thefts that took place along the Oko Ufuma, Uga and Amaokpala highway, among others.

“The most recent, according to the suspect’s (Okechukwu) confession statement, is an attack at a hotel on 13/8/2022 in Ndikelionwu, in which a female staff member was raped and the gang also made off with three television and other items. Attempts are also being made to arrest other fleeing gang members.
